The traditions

La Matrelle, meaning “the traditional mother,” is inspired by my grandparents—hardworking farmers and homesteaders who lived by the wisdom of generations before them.

I create candles as a way to preserve and pass down the tradition of craftsmanship, involving my children in the process so they, too, can experience the value of working with their hands. In a world where many time-honoured skills are fading, I see firsthand how hands-on knowledge fosters confidence, resilience, and resourcefulness in the next generation. Every candle we make is a small act of preservation—keeping these traditions alive, not just for ourselves, but for the world.

My own journey—both as a mother and as a former member of the Canadian military—has deepened my appreciation for tradition, discipline, and the bonds we share through the skills and customs passed down over time. The military, like homesteading, is steeped in rituals and a sense of belonging, reinforcing the idea that we are part of something greater than ourselves.

My brand is about honouring and celebrating long-loved traditions, whether they are our own or those passed down through generations across the world. The skills we pass down—whether in a home kitchen or in an artisan workshop—carry history and meaning. As my business grows, my candle collections will reflect the essence of these traditions, distilling the scents and stories that have shaped generations.

At its heart, this is more than just a candle—it is a connection. A reminder that, though we come from different places, our traditions, our homes, and our stories intertwine. Some will recognize familiar scents, evoking the warmth of their own memories, while others will be transported to places they’ve never been, opening their minds to the richness of the world. Through scent, we celebrate the shared heritage of skill and tradition, reminding us that we are all connected—that the world is but one home, and we are all its people.
